The Rivers State House of Assembly has insisted that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, will be carried through to completion, dismissing calls for a political settlement to resolve the crisis.

Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Assembly, Enemi George, said lawmakers were acting strictly within the confines of the law and not as part of any political agenda. He argued that repeated calls for political solutions undermine the credibility and independence of the legislature.

“Very sincerely, I doubt that because we’ve had one too many political solutions,” George said. “It demeans and diminishes the institution of the Rivers House of Assembly if you say that everything we do is because of politics. Right now, what we are talking about is the law.”

George accused Governor Fubara of repeated acts of misconduct, describing him as a “recidivist” who allegedly continues to violate constitutional provisions despite previous interventions and forgiveness. He cited alleged mismanagement of public funds and the appointment of relatives into positions without due process as part of the accusations against the governor.

He also addressed controversy surrounding a N100,000 “Christmas gift” allegedly credited to lawmakers’ accounts in December 2025 on the governor’s directive. According to George, the funds were rejected not because of the amount but due to constitutional concerns.

“There is no constitutional provision for that. We rejected it because I don’t want to go to prison,” he said, stressing that public funds belong to the people of Rivers State.

George further maintained that past interventions by President Bola Tinubu had failed due to alleged breaches of agreements by the governor, adding that the president could not continually intervene when laws were being broken.

The Assembly had formally commenced impeachment proceedings during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, with 26 lawmakers endorsing allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy. This marks the second impeachment attempt against Fubara following an earlier effort in March 2025.
