The Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved to proceed with the process of removing Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, despite growing calls for political reconciliation and dialogue. The lawmakers made their position clear during a joint press briefing held in Port Harcourt, signaling a decisive turn in the state’s ongoing political crisis.

According to the Assembly members, all factions within the House have now agreed to continue with the impeachment process. This includes legislators who had previously appealed for political solutions rather than outright removal of the governor and his deputy. The lawmakers stated that their change in position was based on the conviction that the executive arm had shown no willingness to retrace its steps or address the concerns raised by the legislature.

The Assembly insisted that its actions are in line with constitutional provisions and legislative oversight responsibilities. Lawmakers argued that repeated efforts to seek reconciliation and dialogue had failed, leaving them with no option but to move forward with the impeachment process. They maintained that the decision was unanimous and reflected the collective will of the House.

The development comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, with various stakeholders expressing differing views on the impeachment move. While some civic groups have described the process as lacking constitutional basis, others have urged calm and called for reconciliation between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, whose political influence continues to loom large in the state.

Governor Fubara has, however, continued to receive public support from some quarters. Recently, he commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s military, a move seen by observers as part of efforts to align with the federal government amid the crisis.

As the impeachment process moves forward, political analysts warn that the situation could further deepen divisions within the state unless urgent steps are taken to manage the fallout. All eyes now remain on the Rivers State House of Assembly as events continue to unfold.
