Real Madrid has secured the signing of Álvaro Carreras from Benfica for a reported €50 million, marking a significant addition to their defensive lineup. The 22-year-old Spanish left-back has agreed to a six-year contract, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2031.

Carreras began his football journey in the youth ranks of Real Madrid, showcasing his potential before making a move to Manchester United in 2020. However, his time at Old Trafford was limited, and he spent the majority of his tenure with the Under-23 team. Seeking more playing time, Carreras embarked on loan spells with Preston North End and Granada, further honing his skills. In January 2024, he joined Benfica on loan, a move that proved pivotal in his development. He quickly established himself as a key player for the Portuguese side, making 11 league appearances and contributing to their success in the Taça da Liga.

The transfer saga was marked by intense negotiations between Real Madrid and Benfica. Initially, Real Madrid hesitated to meet the full €50 million release clause set by Benfica. Reports indicate that the clubs eventually agreed on a payment structure that satisfied both parties, leading to the successful completion of the deal.

Carreras’ arrival is part of Real Madrid’s broader strategy to reinforce their defense. He joins fellow defensive signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, as the club aims to bolster a backline that has faced challenges due to injuries in recent seasons.

The Spanish international’s versatility and defensive prowess are expected to provide Real Madrid with a reliable option at left-back. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively aligns with the tactical approach of manager Xabi Alonso, who is keen on integrating Carreras into the team’s playing style.

Carreras is set to be officially presented at the Ciudad Real Madrid on Tuesday, where he will don the iconic white jersey and address the media for the first time as a Real Madrid player.

This acquisition underscores Real Madrid’s commitment to strengthening their squad ahead of the upcoming season, aiming to return to the pinnacle of European football.
