President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his deep condolences to Jimi and Segun Agbaje, along with the entire Agbaje family, following the passing of their matriarch, Margaret Olabisi Agbaje, on March 5, 2025. In a heartfelt statement delivered through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Mrs. Agbaje as a trailblazer in Nigeria‘s education sector and a towering figure in the Catholic community, whose legacy of service and compassion will endure for generations.
Mrs. Agbaje’s remarkable career in education spanned decades, marked by her unwavering commitment to shaping young minds. She began as a mathematics teacher at Holy Child College in Lagos from 1953 to 1959, later serving as a tutor at St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College in Surulere from 1960 to 1971. Her leadership shone brightest as Headmistress of St. Catherine’s Model School, also in Surulere, from 1971 to 1982. President Tinubu lauded her lifelong dedication, calling her “a beacon of learning, discipline, and kindness.” He emphasized that her greatest joy came from witnessing the success of her students, many of whom rose to prominence in diverse fields.
“Mama Agbaje’s life was a testament to kindness, humility, and unwavering dedication to education,” Tinubu said. “To her students, her greatest fulfilment was seeing their triumphs.” Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, touching countless lives through her nurturing spirit and intellectual rigor. The President’s tribute underscores her role as a nation-builder whose contributions helped lay the foundation for Nigeria’s educational progress.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Agbaje was a devout Catholic and a pillar of her faith community. She served as President of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) in the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province and held various leadership roles within the church, exemplifying her commitment to service and spiritual values. Her dual legacy in education and faith paints the picture of a woman whose life was defined by purpose and impact.
In his message, President Tinubu urged the Agbaje family and all those grieving to find comfort in her enduring legacy. “May her goodness be a lasting memory to all whose lives she enriched,” he said, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul. As Nigeria mourns this revered educator and community leader, her contributions remain a source of inspiration.
