Political analyst Ubong Thompson has shed light on the longstanding political relationship between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing that Tinubu has previously supported Atiku’s presidential ambitions by providing him with platforms to contest under his party banners.

In an interview reflecting on Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, Thompson noted that Tinubu gave Atiku the presidential ticket twice, first under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and later under the Action Congress (AC).

This historical backing, Thompson argued, is often overlooked but remains critical to understanding the complex alliances and loyalties within Nigeria’s political elite.

Thompson explained that political collaboration in Nigeria frequently transcends party lines, with leaders leveraging past alliances and networks to build electoral credibility and influence. He suggested that the support Atiku received from Tinubu in the past could continue to shape strategic decisions and negotiations as the 2027 elections approach.

Furthermore, Thompson highlighted that the ACN and AC platforms were instrumental in providing Atiku with national exposure and legitimacy, helping him consolidate his political base across Nigeria. These alliances, he said, have lasting implications for party loyalty, candidate positioning, and coalition-building in the country’s political arena.
