Poland has secured a $4 billion loan guarantee from the United States to bolster its military modernization efforts, as announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This financial support enables Poland, a NATO ally, to enhance its military capabilities by investing in U.S.-made defense systems. The move underscores the strengthening of defense ties between the U.S. and Poland amid ongoing regional security concerns.

The loan guarantee is part of a broader strategy to modernize Poland’s armed forces in response to regional instability, particularly due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Since 2022, the U.S. has provided Poland with over $11 billion in loans and guarantees to finance major armament initiatives, including acquisitions of Patriot air defense systems, HIMARS rocket systems, and Apache helicopters.

In addition to the U.S. support, Poland is investing in its domestic defense industry. The government has announced further multi-billion investments in Polish defense facilities, aiming to repolonize the defense industry and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance national security and build independent production capacity.

Poland’s commitment to defense spending is evident in its 2025 budget proposal, which includes record defense spending of 187 billion zlotys ($48.7 billion). This allocation constitutes 4.7% of the country’s gross domestic product, making Poland a leader in NATO and the European Union in terms of defense expenditure relative to GDP.
