Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening poverty and insecurity, describing the country as one of the hungriest and most unsafe globally.

Obi made the remarks on Saturday in Asaba, Delta State, during the official declaration and integration of the State Obidient Movement into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He stressed the urgent need for Nigerians to unite as one family and rescue the nation from poor governance in the 2027 general elections.

He lamented that about 150 million Nigerians currently live below the poverty line, highlighting that Nigeria has more people in poverty than China and India combined, despite the two countries’ combined population being nearly three billion. Obi said, “Our country today is one of the most insecure countries of the world. Our country today is one of the hungriest in the world.”

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the federal government for borrowing more money than all previous administrations combined after removing fuel subsidies. He emphasised that poverty and hardship affect all Nigerians regardless of tribe or religion, and called on the ADC to provide practical solutions to the country’s challenges.

Obi concluded, “This country is not poor; it is being badly led. We want to do the right thing for the country; the country has suffered enough.” Senator Andrew Uchendu, Deputy National Chairman of the ADC for the South-South Zone, added that Nigeria has failed in multiple facets of national life, reinforcing Obi’s call for urgent reforms.
