Former presidential hopeful Peter Obi has once again called for a major change in how Nigeria is run. He warned that the country will keep falling behind if its leaders stay caught up in political fights instead of working on building the nation.
Obi shared his thoughts during a book launch event, where he talked about how other countries, especially Singapore, have grown by focusing on development. He used Singapore as an example to show what Nigeria could learn.
In a video from the event, Obi explained how Singapore went from being a poor island with few resources to becoming one of the richest and most advanced countries in the world.
He said Singapore’s success shows what can happen when leaders have a clear vision and plan for the long term.
Obi pointed out that Singapore, once seen as weak with a small population and little land, chose to invest in new ideas, good governance, and discipline across the nation.
Even now, Singapore faces serious land shortages and is building a huge port under the sea, but it stays focused on growth and modernization.
Obi compared this to Nigeria’s ongoing political problems. He accused Nigerian politicians of spending too much time on election fights, personal disputes, and power struggles instead of pushing the economy forward.
He expressed sadness that while other countries are making strong investments for the future, Nigeria is stuck in violence, election-related violence, and divisive talk.
At the event, Obi also spoke to a well-known Ogoni traditional leader. He said he worries that respected traditional leaders often have to ask for peace and fairness, roles that should be handled by those who are actually causing problems in the country.
Obi believes Nigeria’s problems are not because of a lack of resources or talent but because of poor management, corruption, and failure to put the country’s needs first.
He emphasized the need for leaders who admit past mistakes and want to fix the damage.
The former governor said if he ever leads Nigeria, he would start by sincerely apologizing to Nigerians, especially young people, for the years lost due to bad governance and wasted chances.
“In a country blessed with everything necessary for growth, we have continued to waste time,” he said. “If I am ever given the opportunity, I will apologize to everyone for how their time has been wasted.”
Obi’s comments add to the ongoing discussion about Nigeria’s future and the need for leaders who can bring real change.
