Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised Nigeria’s political leadership for focusing on the next election while insecurity continues to spread across the country.
Obi made the remarks in a statement released on Monday through his official social media account, expressing deep concern over recent s across several parts of the country and their devastating impact on civilians and security personnel.
According to him, Nigeria is facing a serious security crisis that requires urgent attention from political leaders.
“Our nation is clearly under siege, and the scale of insecurity is becoming unbearable, spreading widely all over the country,” Obi said.
The former governor of Anambra State cited a recent on Ngoshe community in Borno State where terrorists reportedly overpowered solrs, ing some security personnel and several residents while abducting more than 100 women and children.
He lamented that the sacrifices made by solrs in the fight against insecurity were often ignored or not given the recognition they deserved.
“The sacrifice of our brave and dedicated solrs is passed in silence. I look forward to the day when our fallen solrs are given the dignified burials they deserve, with their bos received and honoured by the nation’s leaders and political authorities,” Obi stated.
The former presidential candidate also highlighted security concerns in other states including Nasarawa State, Kogi State and Benue State where residents have reportedly complained about terrorists occupying farms and forests, forcing villagers to flee their communities.
According to Obi, thousands of residents have been displaced by the violence. He noted that in Nasarawa’s Kadarko area alone, more than 14318 civilians have been registered as internally displaced persons.
He further mentioned reports of kidnappings and violent s in Oyo State and Ondo State, as well as deadly assaults in Kebbi State involving both civilians and security personnel.
Obi also raised alarm over the spread of insecurity to the nation’s capital, citing the recent abduction of residents in Kubwa, located in Abuja.
“The wave of terror has now brazenly crept into our nation’s capital. The in Kubwa this week saw about 19 citizens abducted from their homes, including women and children,” he said.
He accused the political class of paying insufficient attention to the security crisis and instead focusing on political ambitions ahead of future elections.
“The ruling class are instead devastatingly more preoccupied with how to snatch, grab, and run away with the next election,” Obi said.
Obi insisted that Nigerians deserve leadership that prioritises safety, ility and the welfare of citizens.
“These are not just news items. Nigerians deserve commitment and leadership that puts their safety and welfare first. It is time to restore security, dignity and hope to every corner of this nation,” he added.
