The Baltimore Orioles have reportedly secured a significant five-year, $155 million contract with first baseman Pete Alonso, pending a physical. This deal positions Alonso as the second-highest-paid first baseman annually, averaging $31 million, second only to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays.

At 31, Alonso has spent his seven-year MLB career with the New York Mets, where he became the franchise’s all-time home run leader with 264. In the 2025 season, he showcased his power, attaining a .272 batting average, leading the National League with 41 doubles, and driving in 126 RBIs just short of Kyle Schwarber’s 132. His impressive performance earned him his fifth All-Star selection and his first Silver Slugger award.

The Orioles, who finished last in the American League East in 2025, are actively working to enhance their lineup. Alonso’s acquisition is anticipated to introduce veteran leadership and added firepower to an offense that struggled last season, especially after the Mets lost other key players, including closer Edwin Díaz and outfielder Brandon Nimmo.

Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, pointed to favorable conditions in the free-agent market as contributing factors to securing this lucrative deal, noting a shift from the previous stagnation in player contracts. This contract symbolizes the Orioles’ commitment to strengthening their roster and enhancing their competitiveness in the coming seasons, marking a strategic shift in their approach to team building.
