Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of efforts to reposition the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The closed-door meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, took place at Obasanjo’s residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex.

The delegation was led by the party’s national chairman, Taminu Turaki, and included the chairman of the Board of Trustees and former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara, National Secretary Taofeek Arapaja, and former governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and Jonah Jang of Plateau State.

After the meeting, Turaki explained that the visit was to formally introduce the new national leadership to Obasanjo and to seek his guidance as the party prepares for 2027. He described Obasanjo as an experienced elder statesman whose leadership helped strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions during his tenure.

“We came to thank the former president for his vision and contributions to democracy and good governance while in office. We sought inspiration, guidance, advice, and critical support,” Turaki said.

He added that the discussions strengthened the leadership’s determination to rebuild the party and prepare for upcoming elections, acknowledging the challenges ahead.

“The task before us may not be easy, but with the inspiration and guidance we received today, we are ready to go all the way and take the PDP back to power in 2027,” Turaki affirmed.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said Obasanjo emphasized the importance of discipline within the party, warning that indiscipline could jeopardize its future.

“It was a consultative meeting where we discussed the state of the nation, democracy, and party affairs. He tasked us to continue but stressed that discipline must be central to our party administration,” Ememobong said. “He particularly said that indiscipline destroys everything.”

Later, Turaki addressed party members at the Ogun State PDP secretariat, declaring the party “battle-ready” for 2027 and expressing confidence in reclaiming power in Ekiti and Osun states as part of their preparations.
