A segment of the Peoples Democratic Party National Working Committee aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike has set up a new caretaker committee for Enugu State. The move follows Governor Peter Mbah’s decision to join the All Progressives Congress.

The inauguration took place in Enugu on Sunday. It was overseen by acting PDP National Chairman Alhaji Abdulraham Mohameed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu. Members from all 17 local government areas attended.

Governor Mbah left the PDP on October 24, 2025 with his executive council and the state party leadership. His defection ended the PDP’s uninterrupted control of Enugu since 1999.

At the ceremony, former Igboeze South Local Government chairman Vitus Okechi was sworn in as chairman of the caretaker committee. Chukwunonye Okereke was named secretary.

Okechi said the committee will revive the party’s grassroots networks and work to return the PDP to power. He praised members who stayed with the party and promised they would be rewarded. He said returning to the Lion Building in 2027 is a certainty and outlined a mobilisation plan he described as “efficient, smart and relentless.”

Okereke said the committee will lead with integrity and include members across the state. He stressed the need for clear administration and respect for party members.

Dr Okey Ozoani, the immediate past vice chairman, called the fresh leadership a chance to correct past errors. He said the recent problems stemmed from an outside leadership that lost touch with the PDP family and added that the 2027 elections offer a path to restore the party’s standing.PDP Faction Appoints Caretaker Team in Enugu After Governor Joins APC
