The Peoples Democratic Party says the recent move by 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to join the All Progressives Congress is a direct attack on democratic norms.
Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, accused the defecting lawmakers of acting for their paymasters and a demigod. He called their conduct a stain on the reputation of the legislature.
The group of 17 lawmakers announced their defection during a plenary session held on Friday. The Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, led the move and told colleagues he left the PDP after disputes within the party. He said he has formally informed his ward chairman and has joined the APC.
The PDP criticised the lawmakers for repeating a prior defection and for reversing their earlier recantation. The party said these actions will be seen as a deliberate attempt to undermine democratic processes.
“We have seen on various media platforms news of the defection of some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who, for a second time, announced their defection from our party.
“We recall that they had done so earlier and later recanted. These are people whom the world is aware are doing the bidding of their paymaster and demigod.
“They will go down in history as enemies of democracy and those who made mockery of the legislature.”
