The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of being worried about losing the favor of President Bola Tinubu and his declining political influence in Rivers State.

The party made these claims in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, in response to comments made by Wike during his recent end-of-year media chat.

The PDP statement alleges that Wike showed “obvious signs of fear” over his slipping grip on Rivers State and frustration with the steadfast leadership of the PDP at the national level. This comes in the wake of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this month—a move Wike reportedly tried to prevent.

Ememobong criticized Wike for publicly declaring strong support for President Tinubu while still claiming membership in the PDP, describing this behavior as open anti-party activity and incompatible with democratic norms and party loyalty. The spokesperson said these actions justified the disciplinary measures taken against Wike.

The PDP further accused Wike of consistently instigating internal crises within the party to advance his personal political interests. Since assuming office as governor of Rivers State in 2015, Wike has been described as a “recurrent troublemaker” involved in successive leadership battles within the PDP.

These include his role in the removal of Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman, opposition to Uche Secondus after initially supporting him, and his push for Iyorchia Ayu’s appointment followed by calls for Ayu’s removal.

According to Ememobong, Wike’s political strategy thrives on “perpetual conflict,” seeking attention and relevance through disruption, and resorting to destruction when attention wanes. The PDP spokesperson concluded that Wike’s actions deliberately create tension and division, which he uses as leverage to pursue narrow political objectives.
