Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has bolstered its squad with the acquisition of French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Ligue 1 rivals Lille. The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Parisian club, extending his stay until 2030. The transfer fee is reported to be around €40 million, with potential bonuses bringing the total to €55 million.
Chevalier’s rise in French football has been meteoric. Born in Calais, he joined Lille’s youth academy at the age of 11. After a successful loan spell at Valenciennes in Ligue 2 during the 2021-2022 season, where he made 30 appearances, he returned to Lille and quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper. His performances were instrumental in Lille’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League, and he was named Ligue 1’s Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2024-2025 season.
In the Champions League, Chevalier delivered standout performances, notably in victories over Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Juventus. His exceptional shot-stopping abilities and composure under pressure have garnered attention from top European clubs.
PSG’s decision to sign Chevalier aligns with their strategic shift towards integrating young French talent into the squad. Under the guidance of coach Luis Enrique, the club has moved away from the policy of acquiring high-profile international stars, focusing instead on nurturing domestic prospects. Chevalier expressed his excitement about joining PSG, stating, “I am a kid who is realizing his dream. Ever since I was small, I wanted to play at the very highest level.” He also thanked PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, sporting advisor Luis Campos, and coach Luis Enrique for facilitating his move to the club.
