During his recent visit to Asunción, Paraguay, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized the importance of multilateralism and criticized the protectionist policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. Sánchez’s trip aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and support Spanish companies interested in large infrastructure projects in Paraguay.

Sánchez praised the involvement of Spanish firms in key projects such as Routes 2 and 7 and expressed interest in future initiatives like the Asunción-Luque elevated highway.

Addressing the broader international trade landscape, Sánchez openly criticized President Trump’s protectionist stance, particularly the proposed tariffs on European Union goods. He argued that such measures are unjust and counterproductive, advocating for a collaborative approach to global challenges. Sánchez underscored the significance of the EU-Mercosur agreement as a cornerstone for sustainable development and economic cooperation.

Sánchez also announced Spain’s “Commercial Relaunch and Response Plan,” a €14.1 billion initiative designed to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs on Spanish businesses and workers. The plan includes €7.4 billion in new funding and €6.7 billion from existing instruments, aiming to shield the Spanish economy from potential trade disruptions.
