Palmerston, the black and white cat who rose from the streets of London to become Chief Mouser at the Foreign Office, has died in Bermuda, Britain’s foreign ministry confirmed on Monday.

Affectionately known as Palmy, the feline reportedly passed away peacefully on February 12, according to a statement shared on his official social media account. In recent years, Palmerston had relocated to Bermuda, where he joined Governor Andrew Murdoch in 2025 after retiring from Whitehall in 2020.

Described as a special member of the Government House team and a beloved companion, Palmerston was remembered for his gentle nature and loyal service. Tributes poured in following news of his death, including a farewell message from Larry, the long serving Downing Street cat who shared a friendly rivalry with him.

Rescued from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Palmerston joined the Foreign Office in 2016 during a pivotal period in British politics ahead of the Brexit referendum. Named after former Prime Minister Viscount Palmerston, he quickly became a popular figure, amassing nearly 100000 followers online who followed his daily exploits around Westminster.

Beyond his charm, Palmerston was known for his pest control skills, catching mice within weeks of assuming his post. He also helped raise more than 3000 pounds for Battersea, supporting animal welfare causes.

After retiring during the Covid pandemic to enjoy a quieter life, Palmerston returned to public attention in Bermuda, where he welcomed dignitaries and participated in official events.

His passing marks the end of an unusual but cherished chapter in British public life.
