In 2025, Palau unveiled its National Energy Policy 2024–2050 and the Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) Roadmap, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s pursuit of a sustainable energy future. This comprehensive strategy aims to transition Palau’s energy sector towards reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability.

The National Energy Policy outlines a clear vision for Palau’s energy sector, emphasizing the need for appropriate regulations to ensure secure energy services at competitive prices. A central focus is on maximizing cost-effective energy efficiency and renewable energy resources while safeguarding the environment. The policy also promotes environmentally sustainable energy technologies with the goal of substituting imported fossil fuels and supports consumers through the transition towards renewable energy.

To achieve these objectives, the SDG 7 Roadmap sets forth specific milestones for 2025 and 2030. By 2025, the roadmap aims to:

Provide universal access to electricity and clean cooking solutions.

Double the annual investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency globally.

Establish 100% renewables-based power targets in 100 countries.

Achieve a 3% annual efficiency improvement in at least 50 countries.

Reduce annual global greenhouse gas emissions by at least one-third.

Raise energy access investment to USD 40 billion, with 50% directed to Least Developed Countries.

Palau’s commitment to these goals is evident in its strategic action plan, which involves a participatory process with over 30 public and private sector agencies. This plan serves as a framework for implementing the National Energy Policy, guiding both public and private sectors in cooperation with regional and international development partners to establish a sustainable energy sector. Through this implementation, Palau aims to become an international leader in creating a green and renewable energy society.
