Despite calls for calm from stakeholders and the Federal Government, organizers of the October 1 protests against the growing hardship in Nigeria remain resolute in their decision to move forward with the planned demonstrations. The protests, scheduled for tomorrow, come in response to the government’s failure to address demands made by previous protesters.
Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer representing the August 1 protesters who were detained, explained that the decision to organize another round of protests stems from the government’s inaction. According to Adeyanju, the Federal Government has deliberately ignored the concerns raised by citizens, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s pledge to engage with protesters has yet to be fulfilled.
Speaking to Vanguard, Adeyanju emphasized that the persistence of the protests is driven by the worsening economic conditions and the government’s lack of responsiveness to earlier demands. He expressed disappointment with the government’s handling of the situation, accusing it of neglecting its responsibility to address the grievances of the people.
In preparation for the protests, the Jigawa State Police Command has announced that it will deploy officers to maintain order during the demonstrations. Similarly, the Lagos State Police Command held a meeting with protest organizers and assured them that security measures would be in place to ensure the safety of participants.
The Lagos State Government has also issued a warning to protesters, reiterating that the protests must remain confined to two designated venues to prevent any potential disruption of public peace. Authorities have made it clear that protesters will not be permitted to gather outside these areas to avoid any escalation of tensions or breakdown of law and order.
As the nation braces for the protests, the situation highlights the growing frustration among citizens over the government’s failure to address the hardships facing the country, with demonstrators determined to press for change.
