At a high-profile event in Abuja, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, reminded Vice President Kashim Shettima and other dignitaries of a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey that helped shape the country’s current political landscape.

Speaking at the inaugural International Lecture of the Tope Kolade Fasua Economic Development Foundation, the monarch reflected on the 2015 presidential election, emphasizing that the peaceful transition of power was made possible by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat.

“Many of you seated here, especially His Excellency the Vice President, would not be where you are today if not for the statesmanship displayed by Dr Goodluck Jonathan,” the Ooni declared. “When he lost the election, he picked up the phone and called his opponent to congratulate him even before INEC officially announced the results. That singular act saved Nigeria from sliding into chaos.”

The audience, which included top government officials, business leaders, and diplomats, responded with applause. The Ooni used the moment to highlight how rare such gestures are in African politics, noting that Jonathan’s concession on March 31, 2015, remains a global example of peaceful democratic transition.

He praised Jonathan for putting the country first during a time of deep national division, saying, “That phone call prevented what could have been a major crisis.”

Vice President Shettima, who was present at the event, acknowledged the tribute with a smile. The Ooni’s words served as both a commendation and a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic values. He urged today’s leaders to follow Jonathan’s example by choosing unity and peace over political rivalry.

The monarch’s message was clear: true leadership is measured not just by victory, but by the ability to act with humility and prioritize the nation’s well-being above personal or party interests.
