Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to see environmental protection and cleanliness as a shared societal responsibility, stressing that sustainable practices are vital for national wellbeing and future generations.

Mrs. Tinubu made the call on Monday in Abuja while delivering her message to commemorate the International Day of Clean Energy 2026, observed globally on January 26. The 2026 celebration carries the theme “Clean Energy for People and Planet,” highlighting the urgent need to transition to environmentally friendly energy systems that support both human development and ecological balance.

According to the First Lady, the International Day of Clean Energy serves as an important reminder that protecting and preserving the environment is a collective duty that requires active participation from individuals, communities, and institutions across the country. She emphasized that environmental neglect poses serious risks to health, livelihoods, and sustainable development.

“I urge us all to embrace renewable energy and sustainable technologies as an essential foundation for survival, healthy living, and environmental stewardship,” she said. She added that adopting clean energy solutions would not only reduce environmental degradation but also improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the International Day of Clean Energy was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly through resolution A/77/327. The annual observance aims to raise awareness and mobilize global action toward a just and inclusive transition to clean energy, ensuring that no one is left behind in the move toward a more sustainable future.
