Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has made a bold political declaration, stating he will step down from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in Edo during the 2027 presidential election.
In a recent interview, Okpebholo expressed unwavering confidence in Tinubu’s popularity across the state, attributing it to the visible impact of federal and state level projects since the All Progressives Congress (APC) assumed control. He described the political climate in Edo as overwhelmingly pro APC, asserting that opposition forces have lostrelevance.
“There’s no contest here,” Okpebholo said. “Edo belongs to Asiwaju. If he doesn’t win in 2027, I’ll resign no questions asked.”
The governor emphasized that Tinubu’s influence surpasses his own, citing widespread grassroots support and alignment with the president’s development agenda. He also claimed that the APC’s dominance has left no room for viable opposition in the state.
As the 2027 elections approach, Okpebholo’s statement signals a high-stakes commitment to party loyalty and reflects the growing political momentum behind Tinubu in Edo. Whether this confidence translates into electoral success remains to be seen, but the governor’s pledge has certainly raised the stakes.
