The Ogun State Police Command has reported the death of John Udoh, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in the Atoyo Okeigbo community, Aruba, Sagamu, following accusations of motorcycle theft. His accomplice, Peter Ubong, sustained critical injuries during the mob attack.
According to police reports, Udoh and Ubong were part of a five-man gang that invaded the community around 2 a.m., attacking Emeka Ruben and stealing his motorcycle valued at approximately N1.2 million.
SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, shared details in a statement on Friday. Ruben managed to alert local youths, who quickly mobilized to apprehend Udoh and Ubong. The suspects were reportedly beaten severely by the community members, leading to Udoh’s death, which was later confirmed by a doctor at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu. Ubong, on the other hand, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Accomplices and Previous Crimes
While Udoh and Ubong were detained, three other members of their gang—identified as Adaka, Stepen, and Jeresy—managed to escape with the stolen motorcycle. During questioning, the detained suspects admitted to being part of the five-member group responsible for the theft of 15 solar streetlights and two other motorcycles previously stolen from the community. They also provided the names of their accomplices involved in related crimes in Ajaka, within the Sagamu division.
SP Odutola noted that on October 18, 2024, at approximately 7:20 a.m., the Community Development Association (CDA) Chairman of Atoyo Okeigbo reported that the group of thieves had invaded the community, breaking into Ruben’s home and stealing his motorcycle.
I dont buy the polices story. What if the suspect was framed? We need more transparency in these cases.
I dont get why the police are celebrating the death of a suspect. Everyone deserves a fair trial, no matter what theyre accused of.
I think the police should have used non-lethal force. Its disturbing how quickly they resort to violence. #JusticeForAll
I think the police should have used non-lethal force to apprehend the suspect. Taking a life over theft seems excessive.
Why do we praise police for killing suspects instead of using non-lethal methods? Its a cycle of violence. #JusticeForAll
I think the police shouldnt have confirmed the death without a proper investigation. What if there was a mistake? #JusticeForSuspect
I dont understand why people are sympathizing with a motorcycle thief. He got what he deserved. Justice served.
Im not buying this story. How can we trust the police to confirm anything these days? Something fishy is going on.
I think the police should have tried to apprehend the suspect alive instead of using lethal force. Justice should still be served.
Sometimes lethal force is necessary for public safety. Suspects actions determine police response.
I think the police shouldnt have confirmed the suspects death without a proper investigation. What if there was a mistake?
Wow, cant believe theyre celebrating the death of a suspect. Everyone deserves a fair trial, no matter the crime. #JusticeForAll
Wow, I cant believe they confirmed the suspects death! But did they really have to use lethal force? Seems excessive.
Sometimes lethal force is necessary to protect lives. Its not always ideal, but its a harsh reality.
