Some members of the Obidient Movement in Edo State have formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant political realignment ahead of future elections. The defection, which took place on Monday, follows reports of the movement of their leader, Peter Obi, into the party and has been described as a boost for the ADC’s growing national profile.

Welcoming the new members, the National Leader of the ADC, Chief John Oyegun, said their decision reflected a growing determination among Nigerians, especially the youth, to pursue leadership change.

Oyegun, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed optimism that a new Nigeria was achievable given the calibre and commitment of those joining the party.

He noted that the enthusiasm and resolve displayed by the Obidient Movement members were unprecedented, adding that their decision to actively join the ADC showed readiness to take responsibility for nation-building. According to him, the party’s central mission remains saving the country and charting a new course for governance.

The Edo State Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Asemota Igiogbe, said the ADC offered the most credible platform to challenge the APC both in Edo State and nationally. He expressed confidence that Peter Obi would emerge as the party’s flagbearer and ultimately become president, stressing that members were focused on building the party rather than seeking political appointments.

Igiogbe also emphasised that the movement was self-funded and driven by conviction, not financial inducement, while lamenting what he described as betrayals by some elected officials who defected to the APC.
In his remarks, Edo State ADC Chairman, Kenneth Odion, commended the Obidient Movement for joining the party, saying it was well-positioned to perform strongly in upcoming elections.

The state woman leader, Faith Ebhogabhe, described the ADC as being on a rescue mission, urging women and youths to mobilise and change Nigeria’s political narrative.
