Nollywood actor Prince Eke has reacted strongly to the life sentence given to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), calling it nothing more than a political game.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier found Kanu guilty on all seven charges brought against him by the Federal Government. The court handed him life sentences for counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. For count 3, he received 20 years without the option of a fine, and for count 7, he was sentenced to five years, also without a fine.
Taking to Instagram on Friday, Prince Eke shared his thoughts, claiming that the sentence is part of a larger political plan. He said, “Let us call it what it is, MNK’s life sentence was a political stunt. They plan to release him in 2027 and use his freedom to bargain for Igbo votes. This isn’t justice. it’s exploitation. Nigerians are awake. We see the script, and we’re not fooled.”
While Eke’s post stirred reactions online, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, also weighed in on the matter. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Livinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu said he believes President Bola Tinubu is open to hearing from respected Igbo leaders who are advocating for Kanu’s release.
Kalu expressed hope that a political solution could still be found, despite the court’s ruling. He encouraged people from the South East and across Nigeria to stay calm and trust that efforts are being made behind the scenes.
According to Kalu, the door hasn’t closed on Kanu’s freedom, and discussions are ongoing to find a peaceful and fair resolution.
