The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, has said the Service will strengthen its legal mechanisms to effectively address cyber-enabled crimes, migrant smuggling, and other transnational offences, following the deployment of advanced technologies at Nigeria’s airports and borders.
Mrs. Nandap made this known on Monday while declaring open the inaugural Nigeria Immigration Service Law Week Conference at the Service’s headquarters in Abuja. She noted that the significant investments in cutting-edge border management technologies must be backed by robust legal instruments to ensure swift punishment of offenders and improved migration management.
The Law Week Conference, themed “Leveraging Technology and Strengthening Legal Operational Framework for a Secure and Efficient Immigration Service,” was described by the Comptroller-General as timely and relevant in view of ongoing reforms within the NIS.
She emphasized the need to adapt legal and operational frameworks to emerging security challenges, including cybercrime, trafficking in persons, and the smuggling of migrants. According to her, the Service remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to combat these crimes while safeguarding Nigeria’s borders.
“We must strengthen our legal operational framework to address emerging issues such as cyber-enabled crimes and smuggling of migrants. The Nigeria Immigration Service will continue to build the capacity of its officers to investigate, prosecute, and prevent these crimes,” she said.
Represented at the event by the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Human Resources Management, DCG Afolayan Ayeni, Mrs. Nandap assured that the Legal Week would usher in a new era of professionalism, transparency, and accountability within the Service.
Also speaking, the Director of Legal Services, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Yusuf, described the programme as a historic milestone, noting that it provides a platform to review existing legal frameworks, identify gaps, and align the Service’s operations with global best practices.
She commended the Comptroller-General for approving the first-ever Legal Week, saying it would strengthen legal capacity and support efficient, technology-driven immigration services.
