Nigerian Navy Intercepts 44000 Litres of Illegal Fuel Arrests Eight in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted about 44000 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products and arrested eight individuals in Rivers State as part of ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and maritime crimes.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation was carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL by personnel of NNS Pathfinder in the Degema Ogbogoro Ogbologo axis of Rivers State.

Folorunsho explained that the naval patrol team acted on credible intelligence which led to the interception of two wooden boats loaded with suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil. The operation also resulted in the arrest of eight suspects believed to be directly involved in the illegal activity. Some armed accomplices reportedly escaped upon sighting the naval team.

The seized products and suspects are currently in custody and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Navy noted that the successful operation aligns with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff Idi Abbas, who has ordered intensified efforts to curb crude oil theft and other maritime crimes across the country.

Operation DELTA SENTINEL remains a key initiative in Nigeria’s fight against illegal refining and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region. The Navy emphasized that it will continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, increase patrol activities and collaborate with other security agencies to protect critical national assets.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to securing Nigeria’s waterways and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice as part of broader efforts to ilize the nation’s oil sector.
