A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, has been shot and killed inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, in a fatal shooting incident.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at about 7 p.m. at the terminal, located around the Yorkdale Road and Allen Road area of the city.
The Toronto Police Service confirmed that a 40-year-old man, Tyrel Gibson, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing.
According to a police statement, officers responded to a report of a shooting at the terminal on January 4, 2026. Investigations revealed that both the victim and the suspect had boarded a GO bus at the terminal when the suspect allegedly shot Irorere before fleeing the scene on foot.
“Officers arrived at the scene and located the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were immediately performed, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement said.
Police added that the suspect was located and arrested shortly after the incident, and a firearm was recovered during the arrest. The victim was later identified as Osemwengie Irorere, a Nigerian national.
Gibson, who is a resident of Toronto, is expected to face trial and was scheduled to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The killing comes barely two weeks after another Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in the Lewisham area of London on New Year’s Eve, raising renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians in the diaspora.
Investigations into the Toronto shooting are ongoing.
