The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it has arrested several suspects for alleged vote buying during elections in the Federal Capital Territory, recovering millions of naira in cash as part of an anti corruption operation.

According to a statement issued by the agency, operatives were deployed to various polling areas following intelligence reports of illicit financial inducements aimed at influencing voters. The commission said cash sums believed to be intended for distribution were seized during coordinated actions.

The Federal Capital Territory, which includes Abuja, has witnessed heightened scrutiny during recent electoral cycles as authorities seek to curb malpractice and reinforce public confidence in the democratic process. Vote buying has long been cited by observers and civil society groups as a persistent challenge in Nigerian elections.

The EFCC stated that those detained are being interrogated and will face prosecution if sufficient evidence is established. Officials emphasized that electoral integrity is a priority and warned political actors against engaging in unlawful practices.

Civil society organizations welcomed the arrests, describing them as a signal that enforcement agencies are prepared to act decisively. However, some analysts cautioned that sustained oversight and transparent judicial proceedings are essential to deter future violations.

Nigeria has undertaken a series of electoral reforms in recent years aimed at improving transparency, including the adoption of technological tools for voter accreditation and result transmission. While these measures have strengthened aspects of the system, concerns about inducements and local level irregularities persist.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with other security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure credible polls. Observers say the outcome of investigations and subsequent prosecutions will be closely monitored as a test of accountability mechanisms.

As the country continues efforts to consolidate democratic institutions, the latest enforcement action underscores the ongoing battle against corruption in the political arena.
