The Nigerian Army, through the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Intervention Civil–Military Cooperation Scheme, has renovated the historic Magajin Rafi Model Primary School in Sokoto State, a school established 91 years ago. The project followed the recommendation of the executor, Maj.-Gen. Abbas Idris, an alumnus of the institution, as part of efforts to support education and community development.

The renovated school was officially inaugurated on Saturday by the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idris Gobir. The governor described the intervention as a meaningful “giving back” initiative that would positively impact the educational sector in the state.

According to Aliyu, primary education is the foundation of societal growth and leadership development. He noted that whatever achievements individuals attain later in life are built on the early stages of learning. He also highlighted that Magajin Rafi Primary School has produced several notable Nigerians who have served the country in various capacities, including senior military officers, politicians, technocrats, and community leaders.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Maj.-Gen. Paul Koughna, stated that the renovation was carried out under the Army’s Special Intervention Civil–Military Cooperation Scheme. He revealed that the Nigerian Army has completed over 250 similar projects across the country, covering schools, hospitals, and other public facilities as part of its non-kinetic operations.

Shaibu emphasized that the Nigerian Army remains committed not only to security duties but also to community development and building trust with the public. He urged the school management and host community to take responsibility for maintaining the renovated facilities.

Speaking earlier, Maj.-Gen. Abbas Idris said the project was inspired by his personal experience as a former pupil and his desire to create a conducive learning environment for future generations. He expressed appreciation to defence authorities and the Sokoto State Government for their continued support toward education and security.
