Nigeria Police Intensify Security Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

The Nigeria Police Force has reassured citizens of its firm commitment to maintaining national security and public order despite rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Authorities emphasized that Nigeria remains stable and that proactive measures are in place to prevent any spillover effects from the international crisis.

In a statement released on X by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police announced that intelligence driven operations have been intensified across the country. The move is aimed at preventing individuals or groups from exploiting global developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension within Nigeria.

Acting Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to heighten surveillance and strengthen intelligence gathering. Special attention is being given to the North West, North East, and North Central zones. Police commands have also been instructed to collaborate closely with traditional and religious leaders while increasing visibility around worship centres and other public spaces.

The Force stressed that Nigeria will not become a theatre for foreign conflicts, warning that any attempt to import ideological or religious tensions into the country will face the full weight of the law. Citizens have been urged to remain calm, vigilant, and law abiding, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.

The assurance follows reports of joint United States and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent counterattacks that have heightened tensions across parts of the Gulf region. In response, the Nigerian government has issued travel advisories urging citizens in affected areas to exercise caution, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for restraint and de escalation by all parties involved.
