Nigeria Intensifies Fight Against TB and HIV with Domestic Funding and New Prevention Tools

Nigeria is stepping up efforts to eliminate tuberculosis TB and HIV as public health threats by 2030 through a strong focus on domestic financing and innovative prevention strategies, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof Muhammad Ali Pate has announced.

Speaking at the 2026 World TB Day ministerial briefing and the launch of Lenacapavir Len PrEP in Abuja, Pate outlined reforms centered on innovation efficiency and national ownership. He emphasized that reduced global health funding requires urgent local action.

The Federal Government will inject an additional $346 million into HIV TB and malaria programmes in 2026 as part of a broader co financing strategy, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to strengthen the health system through local investment.

Pate highlighted that over 90 percent of Nigeria’s health expenditure is already domestically funded, primarily through government spending and household contributions. He also stressed dismantling siloed approaches to health interventions in favor of an integrated framework that aligns federal state and local resources with partner support.

The minister praised the launch of Lenacapavir a long acting injectable for HIV prevention administered twice yearly, providing a convenient alternative to daily oral drugs. He also introduced the Multi sectoral Accountability Framework for TB MAP TB to enhance transparency track commitments in real time and ensure effective stakeholder delivery.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Dr Iziaq Salako reported historic gains in Nigeria’s TB response with case notifications rising from 138591 in 2020 to 440000 in 2025 and treatment success rates at 94 percent. HIV targets are also nearing achievement with 93 percent of people aware of their status 99 percent on treatment and 95 percent achieving viral suppression.

With strong systems domestic financing and continued collaboration Nigeria is poised to defeat TB and HIV by 2030.
