The Federal Government has begun the evacuation of willing Nigerians in Iran, safely escorting them across the Armenia border as tensions rise in the Middle East.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), confirmed the operation in a post on her X formerly Twitter handle on Tuesday. She explained that officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are coordinating the movement of citizens wishing to leave the country, ensuring their safe passage into Armenia.

“The willing Nigerians in Iran are being safely escorted across the Armenia border by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, ensuring smooth and secure passage for those wishing to leave,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

She reassured the public that no Nigerian has been affected by the ongoing tensions so far, adding that embassy staff remain stationed at the border to receive and assist evacuees.

The evacuation operation, conducted in coordination with Armenian authorities, underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad during emergencies. It reflects ongoing monitoring of developments in the Middle East and proactive measures to safeguard citizens in potentially volatile regions.

Officials emphasized that the operation is voluntary and focused on those who choose to leave Iran, with every effort made to maintain security, organization, and comfort for evacuees throughout the process.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to protect Nigerians in the diaspora, ensuring that citizens facing geopolitical risks or unrest have timely support and safe avenues for relocation. The evacuation highlights Nigeria’s diplomatic collaboration with other nations and its commitment to citizen safety as a priority in foreign policy.
