These agreements were unveiled during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Nigeria at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The visit, marked by high-level engagements and symbolic gestures, underscored the deep ties between the two nations and their shared aspirations for sustainable growth.
Diplomatic Welcome and Key Bilateral Discussions
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Nigeria on Saturday night and was welcomed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The following day, President Tinubu formally received the Indian leader at the Aso Villa, where Modi was treated to a military parade and a 21-gun salute.
During their bilateral talks, the two leaders discussed critical areas of collaboration, including counterterrorism, maritime security, and intelligence sharing. Both sides reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, emphasizing the importance of zero tolerance for terror financing networks and cross-border movements of militants.

Energy cooperation was a focal point of the discussions. Both leaders agreed to long-term contracts for crude oil and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supply, along with technical support for pipeline security, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution.
In the realm of food security, the leaders recognized the importance of agricultural collaboration. Nigeria expressed gratitude for India’s concessions in rice supply during times of need. Both nations agreed to share expertise in agricultural machinery, high-yield seeds, and advanced farming technologies to boost productivity.
Healthcare and Education Initiatives
The healthcare sector received significant attention, with India pledging support for establishing hospitals, diagnostic centers, and innovative health management systems in Nigeria. The Indian government also offered to share its CoWIN digital platform, a revolutionary system that has transformed vaccination campaigns and health data management in India.
To further enhance healthcare delivery, India committed to providing high-quality generic pharmaceutical products at affordable rates under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) scheme.
In education, both nations agreed to strengthen their collaboration, building on longstanding initiatives like the e-VBAB virtual learning scheme. The leaders encouraged Nigerian students to take advantage of India’s scholarship programs to foster academic exchanges and cultural understanding.
Cultural Ties and Tourism
The cultural and historical connections between Nigeria and India were celebrated during the visit. Both leaders emphasized the importance of expanding cultural exchanges through film festivals, literary events, and artistic collaborations.
Tourism was identified as a key area for enhancing people-to-people connections. Efforts to promote travel and cultural interaction between the two nations will further solidify their partnership.
Global Cooperation and Mutual Recognition
President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi pledged their mutual support for UN Security Council reform and committed to working together on regional peace and security, particularly in West Africa. Nigeria also expressed interest in India’s invitation to join the Global Biofuel Alliance and Global Rivers Cities Alliance.
Both nations, as members of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), agreed to intensify their collaboration on renewable energy, including establishing solar parks and increasing the share of renewables in their energy portfolios.
Symbolic Gestures of Friendship
In a gesture of goodwill, President Tinubu conferred the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Prime Minister Modi. During the award ceremony, Tinubu praised Modi’s transformative leadership and the strong democratic values upheld by India.
Modi dedicated the honor to the 1.4 billion citizens of India, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations.
Strengthening a Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Modi’s visit follows President Tinubu’s trip to India in September 2023, during which Indian investors pledged over $14 billion in investments across critical sectors, including energy, telecommunications, and defence.
Modi expressed gratitude for the warm reception, highlighting the significant role played by the 60,000-strong Indian community in Nigeria as a vital link between the two nations.
Both leaders acknowledged the strategic importance of their partnership, vowing to work together to advance the interests of their people and the broader Global South.

Modi also announced the dispatch of 20 tonnes of humanitarian aid to support Nigeria’s flood relief efforts, further cementing the bond between the two nations.
