Newlywed Wife Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Husband in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died after consuming a meal reportedly prepared by her at their home in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.

The tragic incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00pm. According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam, the deceased had taken his lunch at home when he suddenly became seriously ill.

In a statement made available to journalists on Saturday in Dutse, the state capital, SP Adam disclosed that the man was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of the deceased’s wife as the principal suspect in the case. The police spokesperson revealed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.

According to SP Adam, the suspect further claimed that she had sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used in carrying out the act. She reportedly told investigators that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said contributed to her actions.

Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough and detailed investigation. The police said that upon completion of the investigation, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.

The police command urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes. The statement warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences.

The command also reassured residents of its commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across Jigawa State, adding that the suspect remains in police custody awaiting trial.
