Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a former councillor in Ibeju Lekki, Sheleru Olalekan, over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking.
The forty five year old suspect who previously served two terms representing the Orimedu community was arrested on March two thousand and twenty six at his residence in Ilado area of Ibeju Lekki in Lagos State.
According to a statement issued by the NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, operatives recovered forty kilograms of skunk which is a strong strain of cannabis from a room inside the suspect home during a search operation.
Babafemi said the suspect admitted that the drugs and the property where they were discovered belonged to him. He also confirmed that Olalekan had earlier served two terms as a councillor representing the Orimedu community in the local government council.
In another operation within the Federal Capital Territory, NDLEA officers intercepted a thirty two year old businessman identified as Emeka Hyginus Okwor on March three. The suspect was travelling from Obollo Afor in Enugu State to Zuba in Abuja.
A search of his luggage revealed one thousand pills of tapentadol concealed inside baby diapers. Investigators said the suspect confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Niger State where he operates a provision store.
The agency also recorded several other arrests across the country including operations in Kogi State, Kano State, Ogun State, Delta State and Edo State where suspects were caught with different quantities of illicit substances.
During the operations large quantities of tramadol amphetamine codeine syrup and cannabis were seized while drug farms were destroyed in forest areas.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers across the commands for their efforts and urged them to continue strengthening the agency fight against drug abuse and trafficking across Nigeria.
The agency also said it is expanding its War Against Drug Abuse awareness campaign in schools and communities across several states to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse.
