The Take It Back Global movement has issued a strong call for nationwide protests in response to the indefinite detention of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore by the Nigeria Police Force. This call to action was made in a statement released on Monday by the movement’s Director General, Dr. Chidi Nwanyanwu, who condemned the detention as a clear violation of justice and human rights.
Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, was detained after refusing to comply with what he described as “illegal” bail conditions set by the police. These conditions, which Sowore deemed “ridiculous,” included providing a level 16 civil servant as a surety and surrendering his passport. Following his exposé on police officers allegedly extorting motorists in Ikeja, Lagos State, Sowore was invited for questioning and subsequently detained when he rejected these bail terms.
Reacting to this development, Take It Back Global emphasized that Sowore’s detention, despite his compliance with the police invitation for an interview, starkly illustrates the Nigerian authorities’ disregard for the rule of law. The movement stated, “Despite honoring their invitation for an interview, Sowore has been unjustly detained, an act that highlights the blatant disregard for the rule of law and human rights in Nigeria.”
In response, the movement has urged its members, supporters, and all advocates for freedom and equality to join in demanding Sowore’s immediate release. “In light of this egregious affront to justice, we call upon our members, supporters, and all who believe in the cause of freedom and equality to stand with us in demanding Sowore’s immediate release,” the statement read.
If their demands go unmet, Take It Back Global plans to mobilize for nationwide protests not just to demand Sowore’s freedom but to challenge the broader issues of corruption and oppression within Nigeria. They reaffirmed their commitment to democracy and justice, stating, “We remain unwavering in our commitment to the ideals of justice and democracy, and we shall not be deterred by these attempts to intimidate and suppress our movement.”
The movement also called on Nigerian authorities to adhere to principles of fairness, transparency, and the rule of law, ensuring that Sowore’s rights are protected. “We demand that the Nigerian authorities adhere to the principles of fairness, transparency, and the rule of law, and to ensure that Sowore’s rights are upheld,” they concluded, rallying for a collective effort towards a Nigeria free from corruption, oppression, and impunity.
