NAF Denies Civilian Casualties in Zamfara Airstrikes Amid Ongoing Investigation

In the of Zamfara , the Air (NAF) has recently come under scrutiny following allegations that its airstrikes notorious bandit leader Bello Turji to casualties. Reports from local sources, including counter-security Zagazola Makama, suggested that at least 16 of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG) were killed in what was described as a tragic misidentification during operations in Tungar Kara, Maradun Local Government Area.

However, NAF has vehemently denied these claims. Air Vice Marshal Edward Akinboyewa, the spokesperson for NAF, stated that the operations are executed with utmost care to avoid civilian casualties. “We take every precaution to prevent harm to civilians during operations,” he emphasized, that the allegations could be part of a propaganda strategy by terrorists to discredit the military’s achievements. He clarified that no credible evidence has been found to support the claims of civilian deaths, although an investigation is diligently underway to ascertain the facts.

In response, NAF issued an statement titled, “NAF Conducts Decisive Air in Zamfara, Investigating Vigilante Casualty Reports,” which highlighted the success of the strikes in neutralizing bandit threats and rescuing kidnap victims. The statement underscored the NAF’s commitment to both security operations and the safety of civilians.

Despite these , the incident has stirred significant public and political reaction. Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, while lauding the NAF’s efforts in curbing banditry, expressed condolences to the families of those affected by the airstrike. In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant, Sulaiman Idris, the governor acknowledged the possibility of a tragic error where vigilantes were misidentified as bandits. This acknowledgment reflects a complex situation where the lines between combatants and civilians can blur, especially in areas rife with insurgency.

Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s support for the military’s role in restoring but stressed the importance of ensuring civilian safety during such operations.
