African pay television company MultiChoice has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform Showmax after more than a decade of operation in the digital entertainment market.

The company informed subscribers about the decision on Thursday through an official message, stating that the move followed a comprehensive review by the Showmax board. While the platform will eventually shut down, the company did not provide a specific timeline for the closure.

Showmax was launched in 2015 in South Africa and quickly became one of Africa’s most recognized video streaming services, offering a wide range of local and international movies, series, and sports content.

In its message to subscribers, MultiChoice assured users that the current service will continue to operate normally for now. Customers can keep streaming content without any interruption while the company prepares for the eventual shutdown.

According to the company, subscribers remain a top priority and efforts are being made to ensure a smooth transition once more details about the closure are finalized.

“We are writing to inform you of an important update regarding Showmax,” the company said in the message to subscribers.

“Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future.”

MultiChoice emphasized that users do not need to take any action at this stage. The company also stated that additional information including timelines and future steps will be communicated well in advance.

Industry analysts believe the decision may be linked to increasing competition in the global streaming market, where major platforms such as Netflix and Amazon continue to dominate the digital entertainment space.

MultiChoice explained that the move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its digital offerings and ensure long term sustainability in a rapidly evolving streaming industry.

Despite the upcoming shutdown, the company reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining strong relationships with its subscribers and ensuring that any ces are clearly communicated ahead of time.

The development marks a significant shift in Africa’s streaming landscape as Showmax has played a key role in promoting local film and television content across the continent since its launch.
