For 29 days, Africa held the world’s attention as 24 nations clashed for continental supremacy at the 35th Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. From stunning infrastructure to emotional fan stories and controversial officiating, the tournament delivered drama on and off the pitch. In the end, Senegal’s Teranga Lions emerged champions, claiming their second AFCON title after a tense and chaotic final.

One of the tournament’s biggest triumphs was its organisation. For the first time in AFCON history, hosts provided nine world-class stadiums across six cities, complete with dedicated base camps for all 24 teams. The quality of pitches drew widespread praise and played a major role in the high standard of football on display. Morocco also set the tone early with a spectacular opening ceremony featuring global stars Davido and French Montana.

Among the fans, DR Congo supporter Michel Nkuka Mboladinga became an unlikely icon. His striking outfits and solemn tribute to national hero Patrice Lumumba captured hearts across the continent. His emotional reaction to DR Congo’s elimination, and the subsequent apology from Algeria forward Mohamed Amine Amoura after mockery, added a human touch to the tournament.

On the pitch, Morocco 2025 produced few major upsets, highlighting the growing gap between Africa’s elite and emerging sides. While underdogs like Tanzania and Sudan threatened surprises, experience ultimately prevailed. Attendance figures, however, told a positive story, with over 1.34 million fans filling the stands — the highest in AFCON history.

The tournament also set a new scoring record with 120 goals, surpassing the previous high set in 2023. Yet, challenges persisted. Ticketing issues plagued fans, with scalpers inflating prices, while poor refereeing and VAR malfunctions sparked outrage.

Tragedy struck with the death of Malian journalist Mohamed Soumaré, casting a shadow over the event. The final itself ended controversially, marred by protests, a missed penalty, a post-match brawl, and Morocco’s shattered dream on home soil.

Despite its flaws, Morocco 2025 will be remembered as one of the most ambitious and memorable AFCON editions ever.
