Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, has described Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment on the Peoples Democratic Party PDP Ibadan convention as a victory for the rule of law, urging party members to prioritize reconciliation over personal interests. Speaking in Abuja, Wike emphasized that the dismissal of multiple appeals with heavy costs highlights the importance of adhering to statutory provisions, the Electoral Act, and the party constitution.

Wike explained that violations of these laws transform internal party matters into issues warranting judicial intervention. With party primaries approaching in April and May, he cautioned against taking the matter to the Supreme Court, saying it would be self destructive and could harm the party’s standing. “Leave your ego. Leave your personal interest. Let us make PDP the Number 1 opposition party,” he said.

The ruling effectively nullified the Ibadan convention, confirming that the tenure of previous officers had expired and that the National Caretaker Committee is the legally recognized body managing party affairs. Preparations for a fresh National Convention are underway, scheduled for March 29 and 30 in Abuja. Due to a venue clash with the ruling All Progressives Congress APC at Eagle Square, the PDP has secured the Velodrome near the National Stadium as an alternative location.

Wike stressed that compliance with laws is non negotiable, noting that the dismissal of nine appeals with costs totaling approximately ₦18 million serves as a lesson in political accountability. Party members are being called upon to unite and chart a path forward to strengthen the PDP ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
