Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has clarified the recent security incident at Akure Airport in Ondo State, assuring travellers that aviation facilities across Nigeria remain safe.

Keyamo, speaking on Tuesday, acknowledged that a porous segment at the rear of the airport created an access point that was exploited during the incident involving suspected criminals and locals. He emphasized that the airport itself was not a target and that passengers were never in direct danger.

The Minister also noted discrepancies between reports by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria FAAN and the police. While FAAN reported that four suspected bandits were arrested at the airport following a security operation, the police stated that only two suspected logistics suppliers aiding kidnappers were apprehended along nearby routes, not inside the airport.

Speaking on Frontline, a programme on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, Keyamo said, “Of course there was an intrusion into the airport in Akure not that they were targeting the airport. The airport was not a target. Passengers were not a target.” He added that the porous fence allowed individuals to enter the premises while fleeing other threats.

Keyamo announced a comprehensive investigation into the incident, directing aviation security units and law enforcement to coordinate and provide accurate reports. He emphasized that any lapses in duty or surveillance would lead to appropriate disciplinary action.

The Minister assured the public that airport security infrastructure is being upgraded and funds are being raised to rebuild compromised sections of the fence. He reiterated that the priority is the safety of travellers and the integrity of aviation operations across the country.
