Miley Cyrus, the 32-year-old American singer, opened up about a harrowing medical emergency that nearly led her to abandon her music career. During a May 21, 2025, interview on Apple Music’s The Zane Lowe Interview Series, Cyrus revealed she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture while hosting her Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party special on NBC in 2023, co-hosted with her godmother, Dolly Parton. The incident, which occurred mid-performance, caused “extremely excruciating” pain, yet Cyrus pushed through, delivering duets with Parton, Sia, and Paris Hilton. “I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it, but it was pretty traumatic,” she shared.
The rupture, a condition where a fluid-filled sac on or inside an ovary bursts, left Cyrus in severe distress, prompting thoughts of quitting music. However, a pivotal conversation with Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, who produced the special, changed her perspective. “He said to me, ‘Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild,’” Cyrus recalled. Michaels emphasized that many artists face similar challenges, noting, “You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were quitting music. Everyone has these traumatic experiences.” This advice inspired Cyrus to persevere.
Cyrus’s resilience shines through as she prepares to release her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, on May 30, 2025, alongside an accompanying film. Reflecting on the ordeal, she told Lowe, “What I’ve always realized is that it will quit me before I ever quit it.” Her determination underscores her commitment to her craft, transforming a traumatic moment into a catalyst for artistic renewal. The experience, though painful, has fueled her creative resurgence, solidifying her status as a pop icon unafraid to confront adversity.
