Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are currently locked in a major legal dispute at a Paris labour court, with both parties seeking significant financial compensation. Mbappé, who transferred to Real Madrid in June 2024, is claiming over €260 million from PSG, which includes €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses, alongside damages for alleged contract violations and psychological harassment.
In a counterclaim, PSG is pursuing €240 million from Mbappé, arguing this figure reflects the compensation for a failed €300 million transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in 2023 that they allege Mbappé sabotaged. However, Mbappé’s legal team asserts that the transfer offer was never actually presented to him.
The controversy began in July 2023 when Mbappé opted not to sign a contract extension with PSG, resulting in his temporary exclusion from team activities, including preseason training in Asia. PSG alleges that Mbappé later agreed to forgo certain payments to help the club’s financial situation but subsequently contested that agreement. Ultimately, he left PSG on a free transfer for Real Madrid in June 2024.
The court has set a ruling date for December 16, 2025, with both sides anticipating a decision that could significantly impact future contractual relationships between players and clubs in French football. The unfolding situation highlights the complexities of player agreements and the legal ramifications of high-profile transfers within the sport.
