A big political shift has happened as over 1,600 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State’s Limawa wards, Dutse Local Government Area, have abandoned the ruling party to join the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The mass defection, which unfolded during a spirited rally in Limawa on Friday, drew a large turnout of supporters waving PDP flags and chanting slogans of change.
The defectors, comprising youths, women, and men from various communities voiced their disillusionment with the APC, citing unmet promises and a lack of tangible development as key reasons for their departure.
Hon. Umar Danjani, the PDP’s deputy state chairman, officially welcomed the new members on behalf of the party’s leadership. He hailed the move as a powerful statement of intent and a significant blow to the APC’s dominance in Limawa, a ward long considered a political fortress for the ruling party.
“Limawa has been the heartbeat of APC influence in Dutse, producing influential figures like the SSA on Students Affairs and a sitting member of the State Assembly,” Danjani noted. “To see 1,600 people walk away from that legacy speaks volumes about the people’s yearning for genuine leadership.”
He emphasized that the PDP is not merely a political alternative but a platform committed to inclusive governance, economic empowerment, and social justice. “We don’t just welcome members we uplift them. This is the beginning of a new chapter for Jigawa,” he declared.
Leading the charge was Umar Abubakar, popularly known as Young Danmodi, who delivered a fiery address on behalf of the defectors. “The APC sold us dreams but delivered despair,” he said. “Our roads are crumbling, our youth are jobless, and our communities are neglected. We refuse to be ignored any longer.”
Despite Limawa’s reputation as an APC bastion, Abubakar expressed confidence that more defections were imminent. “Even with their big names and titles, the people are ready for change. We’re not just switching parties we’re reclaiming our future.”
He concluded with a rallying cry: “We’re done waiting. The PDP is our new home, and we’re ready to rebuild Jigawa for the next generation.”
This political change comes just months after the APC celebrated a massive influx of over 60,000 defectors from opposition parties in a Dutse rally highlighting the fluid and fiercely contested nature of Jigawa’s political terrain.
