Enzo Maresca has defended the direction of Chelsea, insisting the club is moving forward and that he pays little heed to external criticism. Speaking to during an interview, the manager said recent results and headlines have not shaken his confidence in the project he is building at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea currently occupy third place in the Premier League, sitting six points behind leaders Arsenal after eleven matches. Maresca acknowledged the club has endured an unsettled period since the Clearlake Capital takeover in 2022, a phase that saw several managerial changes but he believes the current squad of young players is developing the character needed to challenge for honours.
“For the most part, the distracting noise now concerns football: how we play and how we seek results,” Maresca remarked, arguing that a clearer on-field identity is emerging. Consecutive victories over Wolves and Tottenham have reinforced that view, even as the side’s overall league form remains inconsistent.
The coach conceded that the Premier League’s depth of quality makes every fixture demanding. “Competition is fierce; every opponent is prepared and capable,” he said, stressing the necessity of continual tactical adaptation to meet the league’s challenges.
Maresca also pointed to recent setbacks, notably the surprise defeat to promoted Sunderland as reminders of the league’s unpredictability and of the strong coaching work being done elsewhere. He praised the achievements of managers such as Regis Le Bris and Andoni Iraola, suggesting their progress underlines how competitive the division has become.
A notable positive for Chelsea this season has been the return of captain Reece James. Having started seven matches, James has grown into a clearer leadership role within the squad, Maresca observed, serving as an on- and off-field reference point for younger teammates.
While inconsistency remains an issue with only six league wins from eleven games, Maresca’s assessment was upbeat: progress is being made, standards are being set, and the manager believes the club’s trajectory is upward as they seek to convert promise into sustained success.
