Harry Maguire has opened up about Rúben Amorim’s difficult spell at Manchester United, admitting that the partnership between the coach and the squad “didn’t click” despite his confidence in Amorim’s abilities.

In an interview with The Guardian, the England defender refrained from criticizing the Portuguese tactician, instead expressing admiration for his potential. Maguire said he believes Amorim will go on to achieve great success in his managerial career, particularly at another club.

“I have nothing bad to say about him. I do believe he’ll go on and have an amazing career, and at his next club he’ll probably go and win many, many football matches,” Maguire stated.

However, the defender acknowledged that Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford ultimately fell short of expectations. He admitted that players must share responsibility for the disappointing outcome.

“It just didn’t click or work and us, as players, have got to take a lot of responsibility for that as well,” he added.

Amorim was appointed United manager in November 2024 following his success with Sporting CP, where he earned widespread recognition for his tactical approach and domestic achievements. His arrival at Manchester United was met with high expectations, but translating that success to the Premier League proved challenging.

During his time in charge, the club struggled for consistency in league matches and domestic cup competitions. Reports suggested that his tactical system and high intensity demands did not fully align with the squad, contributing to inconsistent performances.

Amorim eventually departed the club in January 2026, bringing an end to a turbulent chapter. Despite the setbacks, Maguire’s comments highlight a sense of respect within the dressing room and a belief that the manager’s potential remains intact.

As Manchester United continues its search for ility and long term direction, the focus now shifts to rebuilding momentum and restoring competitiveness at the highest level.
