A somber mood swept through London on Sunday as family, friends, and members of the boxing community gathered to mourn two close associates of former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. Sina Ghami and Abdul Latif Kevin Ayodele tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Nigeria last Monday, while Joshua survived with minor injuries.
The Janaza (funeral prayer) for the deceased took place at the London Central Mosque, drawing a large crowd of mourners who came to pay their respects. Ghami’s burial was scheduled later in the day at Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium, followed by a wake in honour of both men at Cavendish Banqueting Hall in North West London.
The fatal accident occurred while Joshua and his team were travelling in a Lexus SUV during a visit to Nigeria, following his December 19 victory over Jake Paul in Miami. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Ghami and Ayodele. Joshua was treated in hospital and discharged on New Year’s Eve.
Both men were regarded as integral members of Joshua’s inner circle, playing key roles in his training, preparation, and professional growth. Their sudden deaths have cast a shadow over what was intended to be a celebratory period in the boxer’s career.
Ahead of the funeral rites, the remains of Ghami and Ayodele were repatriated to the United Kingdom. The incident has also raised concerns over road safety, as legal proceedings continue in Nigeria. The driver involved, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been arraigned by the Ogun State Police Command on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid licence. The court granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million, and the matter has been adjourned until January 20.
The London service brought together mourners to honour the lives of Ghami and Ayodele, reflecting their significant contributions to Joshua’s journey and the wider boxing community. Their untimely passing has left an indelible mark on both the sport and those closest to the champion.
