Abuja based constitutional lawyer and rights activist Deji Adeyanju has praised the Federal Government for granting temporary release to former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El Rufai.

Hajiya Umma reportedly passed away on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, where she had been receiving medical treatment. In response, authorities allowed El Rufai, who is currently in detention, to attend her burial rites in what many have described as a humanitarian gesture.

El Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is being held over allegations related to corruption and abuse of office. His detention followed a court order after he was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Adeyanju described the government’s decision as both humane and commendable, while stressing the importance of legal backing. He noted that since El Rufai was remanded by a court order, any temporary release should be supported by proper judicial authorization.

According to him, the move reflects a necessary balance between the enforcement of justice and respect for human dignity. He emphasized that such actions should not be interpreted as an attempt to evade accountability but rather as a lawful and compassionate consideration in exceptional circumstances.

Adeyanju further described the development as a positive signal, showing that authorities can demonstrate empathy while still upholding the rule of law.

El Rufai’s legal challenges stem from a series of high profile allegations and criticisms he made after leaving office, which reportedly drew the attention of federal authorities. Investigations into those claims, alongside alleged financial misconduct during his tenure, led to his arrest and prosecution.

The decision to grant him temporary release highlights the intersection of law, politics, and humanitarian considerations within Nigeria’s justice system, where similar allowances are occasionally made under strict supervision.
