The Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC of focusing more on the 2027 election than on fixing the country’s growing problems.
In a statement released in Abuja, caucus leader Afam Victor Ogene said Nigeria is facing serious issues that need urgent attention. He said the government seems more interested in politics than in dealing with insecurity, inflation, and the rising cost of living.
He noted that while the President has every right to seek another term, the government must not forget its duty to the people.
The lawmakers said insecurity is spreading in many states, contractors are angry over unpaid money for completed work, and federal ministries are struggling to carry out their budgets properly. They said this has made life harder for many Nigerians and slowed down development.
They also criticised the government for not following key parts of the Appropriation Act and raised concerns about big spending decisions like the Lagos–Calabar coastal road project. They said many Nigerians are now scared to travel during the holidays because of bad roads and rising s by armed groups.
Another issue they raised was the handling of a large pipeline-security contract. They questioned how N17.5 trillion was spent in 2024 and compared it to the N18 trillion spent over 12 years on fuel subsidy, which they said helped people more directly.
They stated:
“Nigerians would remember that over a 12-year period, the country spent about N18 trillion on subsidy (which benefitted everyone through affordable transportation and cheaper costs of foodstuffs), but on the excuse of lack of funds to sustain the subsidy regime, this administration has clearly robbed Peter (Nigerians), to pay Paul (cronies), through a questionable pipeline-security contract whose executors are unknown.”
They ended their statement with a direct message to the President:
“So, while the country sits on the precipice, all Mr. President thinks about is to return to power in 2027.
Mr. President, while your quest is a legitimate aspiration, please do well to attend to the current stark realities confronting Nigerians.”
I think its unfair to solely blame Tinubu for Nigerias problems. There are deeper issues at play. Lets consider all perspectives.
Interesting perspective, but can we really blame Tinubu for thinking ahead? Lets focus on solutions, not just accusations.
I disagree – Tinubu has a right to plan for future elections while addressing current issues. Lets not jump to conclusions.
Cant blame Tinubu for looking ahead to 2027. Planning is key in politics, but action on current issues cant wait.
I dont buy it! Tinubu has a right to plan for the future while addressing current issues. Lets give credit where its due.
Seems like Tinubu is playing the long game, but should he be more focused on the present issues facing Nigeria? Lets discuss!
I cant believe theyre already talking about the 2027 elections! Shouldnt they be focusing on fixing things now?
